ON A PERSONAL NOTE:

In the last newsletter, I wrote that I had become an open water scuba diver. Two weeks ago I received a phone call at work from Bob at The Great Lakes Dive Center asking me if I would like to attend the advanced open water scuba diver course scheduled for the next two days. They had asked Tom to be the dive master for the open water course for that weekend and I was just going to go along and dive for fun.

Well, I will admit that I panicked a little bit when he asked me this. I had not planned on taking the advanced course until next year maybe - if ever. The advanced course consists of five dives: buoyancy control, navigation, night, deep and search and rescue. I was fairly confident about all the dives except the night dive. I do not really care for being near the water at night. In the past few years, I have managed to walk out on a dock and go out on a little boat, so I figured that the next logical step would be to actually get in the water at night. I told Bob that I would have to think about it and would let him know in the morning.

That night we drove to Ohio and I finally convinced myself that this was a wonderful opportunity to overcome another fear (that box is getting smaller that I have created for myself). I am very proud to say that I am now an advanced open water scuba diver!!! I felt very proud of myself last month for becoming an open water diver, so you can imagine what the ride home was like for Tom. I was whooping and wooo hooo-ing most of the way home. And he does not even hold it against me that I (unintentionally) attempted to drown him.

I had a moment of panic during the night dive when a silt wall came up on my left side and I lost my equilibrium. I thought I was ok, but within a few minutes I was shooting up to the surface - wondering how I got there. He came up with me and then I dove down again (holding his hand) before he had his regulator in his mouth (oops!!). Fortunately for both of us, he is part fish and was able to get the regulator in his mouth at about 30 feet.

I had a lot of learning experiences during that weekend and am very glad that I took the course. I also learned a lot about myself. Even in the face of one of my worst fears, I was able to overcome it and have fun in the process. I am very thankful for Tom and my new friends at the Great Lakes Dive Center. Jennifer was my dive partner and Kelly was the dive master. They both taught me some things also, along with the instructors, Mike and Bob. (Thank you Bob for holding my hand for the 70' dive!!) I had to do another giant stride into the water, but this one was a lot closer to the water, thankfully. Thanks to these wonderful people, I have more confidence with the giant stride and the 'demon-drop' feeling may actually start to become fun.

I have done one dive at a local lake since taking these courses and had a lot of fun with it. I am even beginning to control my buoyancy better. What a wonderful feeling to be able to just lay there suspended in the water. Discovering this new world is going to be a grand new adventure.

I will attempt to not talk about scuba diving in every newsletter (big smile). I have just been having so much fun with it and the learning experiences are nice to share. I did want to mention that the reason I finally decided I wanted to attempt scuba diving was from watching the DVDs that Tom has created. They are so beautiful and fun and I wanted to be a part of that underwater world.

Enough from me for now - thank you for reading! If you are new to the newsletter, please go to the Newsletters page on the web site and check out the archived editions.
